4.5 The Wernick Way Forward Scheme
The Wernick Way Forward Scheme offers a clear progression path and a
programme of training and support to develop the experience and skills
needed to work as a Yard Operative at one of our hire depots. Yard
Operatives prepare and renovate modular cabins ready for hire.
The bespoke Yard Operative Training Programme takes up to 18 months, during which the trainee
undertakes internal and external training to develop their knowledge and skills. Certificates are
received for each module completed, culminating in becoming a multi-skilled operative. Ultimately,
the programme provides increased skills and greater opportunities for individuals.
“
My journey with Wernick started in August 2008 when I joined PK
Accommodation as a Sales & Hire Co-ordinator. Never having worked in the
industry before, it was a challenge to learn about the different cabins and
modules that filled the yard and that needed to be worked into the projects.
Trevor Shayler, who was my second Manager, taught me the basics of
AutoCAD for designing layouts. During that time, as an Estimator / Designer, I
was taking the sales enquiries, designing the layouts, estimating, sending out
the quotations and after the sale, project controlling.
There are six of us in the Estimating & Design team, we all have our own
individual strengths and work well together but for me, managing a team that
supports each other is much easier than otherwise and consideration for the
workload of each other is high on the agenda.

I’ve been at Wernick for 2 years and have progressed
through the Wernick Way Forward Scheme. The Scheme
has provided a structured programme for me to
undertake various tasks and jobs at the depot, allowing
me to develop new skills and progress my knowledge for
both modular buildings and portable units. I am now being
supported with further training at the depot to enable me
to learn new skills and to hopefully further my career at
Wernick with taking on more roles and responsibilities.
I also led the refurbishment of a portable unit which
Manchester depot donated to Salford Roosters Rugby
League Club. The opportunity gave me an insight into
the valuable work that Wernick undertakes with our local
communities in creating new usable spaces. Through
what I have learned during my time at Wernick I was
able to put this back into the local community.

When it comes to training and progression, I have always felt supported and encouraged by Wernick. This year,
I have achieved my IRCA ISO 9001 internal auditor certificate, and my Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior
Management. I know there will be more learning opportunities moving forward, and I look forward to them. Every
day is a school day!
Since becoming part of the Wernick Group, I have always admired their encouragement for personal development.
Since completing my NEBOSH I haven’t had as much time to push myself for further qualifications, but recently I
completed my Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior Management, and I am very proud of this achievement.
